Sheeva scraped at the snow at the base of a tree, letting out a growl when it too yielded no results. Pacing to a bush she shook the snow from its branches and sniffed again, and again found nothing. Sitting in the snow she closed her eyes and tried to think like Ari and Red. Where would they go if they came back here?
“Troubles?” a cold voice called. Leaping to her paws she whirled to find Kodiak sitting calmly on a rock nearby. Blood still slowly leaking down the side of his head and into the pearly snow. Sheeva crouched and let out a growl, taking in a breath in preparation to call for the others. “Calm down! I’m only here to talk, for real this time.” he lifted a paw to his ear again and hissed from the pain.
Slowly letting out her breath she asked. “What is there to talk about?” Kodiak swished his tale lazily and looked distractedly off into the woods.
“You have questions, and the answers do me no good so I might as well tell you.” flicking his non battered ear his attention turned pointedly on Sheeva. “And I find it obvious that you want the matter of your siblings to stay quiet for now.”
Nodding, she slowly sat back down in the snow. “Who else survived the sickness with you?”
Kodiak snorted and shook his head. “Beating around the bush I see, ok… A few, Bluemoon, Fox, Shay, and a couple others. They all left though, afraid that the disease would get back into the ecosystem and kill us all.”
“Why didn’t you leave?”
“After my pack fell there was nothing I could do to stop the last few from leaving, and before you suggest it I wasn’t going to find another pack and take orders!” Sheeva shut her mouth. “So I stayed, unwilling to leave yet still not knowing why I was still here…”
“Why were Ari and Red here?” Trepidation coiled in her gut and she shivered.
“They were looking for you actually. Said something about, Daddy wanting you to come home… Whatever that means...” Dread crept up Sheeva’s spine, cold and snake like it twined around her neck and began squeezing the air from her lungs.
“He’s still alive?!” Sheeva squeaked, then composing herself somewhat she cleared her throat. “Why?”
“God help me if I know, I’m only the messenger.” Giving the female a hard look he queried. “Why are you still worried about them? They left you didn’t they?” Leaning down from his rock he tilted his head, a very small grin playing on his lips. “And why are you so afraid of your dad?”
Taking a deep breath Sheeva got to her pawn and shook the loose snow from her fur. “Those are the questions aren’t they…” Nodding to the smoky gray wolf she began retracing her snowy paw prints, calling over her shoulder. “Thanks for the answers!”
“Is it because they’re family?” Hopping off his rock he stopped at the edge of the clearing and watched her leave. Pausing for a moment Sheeva looked back and gave her former alpha a steely glare.
“I have a new family now!”
